Hailed by The New York Times as "an important new artistic voice" and by Gramophone as "a post-millennial Schubert," Mohammed Fairouz is one of the most significant composers of vocal music of our time. HIs oratorio Zabur (Arabic for "psalms") is a kind of war requiem documenting a conflict's effects on human beings, most notably children. Though cast in a contemporary setting, in a city under siege, Fairouz evokes a timeless world, acknowledging tragedy while asserting an eternal, luminous hope that transcends the disastrous present.

5 - A gorgeous piece of music written by a contemporar - Julie - 10/26/2016
This piece is a wonderfully woven tapestry, with threads of English and Arabic, the Psalms, through adult and child voices, as well as through brilliant soloists. It is a war requiem for our time, an expression of sorrow for all the violence we see and hear about every day, and an expression of hope for the peace we all can make possible. The music is incredibly varied, from themes of anguish and suffering through dissonant and explosive sound, to themes of childlike wonder, stillness, and peace through equally brilliantly-done quiet sound. The hum, the sound of the naked human voice, is on display in many parts of Zabur. I would recommend it for your friends, your family, even for teachers' gifts... for all subjects, sociology, religion, history, music! It is a piece that spans all of these things. The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir and the Indianapolis Children's Choir have put together this wonderful project and it should be listened to, studied, and performed for many years to come.
