It was during the winter of 1900–01 that Elgar began sketching what he hoped would turn into a symphony – his first. The sketches were quickly absorbed into several shorter pieces, one of which was the Cockaigne overture. As for the First Symphony, seven years would pass before its première in Manchester and subsequent triumphant London performance. Conducting this all-Elgar program is Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo, who since the early 2000’s has held top conducting posts in England.
