Widely known as “America’s March King,” John Phillip Sousa was a master of reading his audience’s tastes, and composing to what they wanted to hear. In addition to his marches, Sousa also wrote a great deal of waltzes, humoresques, descriptive pieces, songs, and operettas, which are much less known. This album by the famous Allentown Band showcases some of Sousa’s humoresques and descriptive vignettes. Sousa’s humoresques are developed by using clever variations on a familiar melody, or a sequence of songs with a common theme. They also frequently showcase soloists or section solis, in addition to fun sound effects. The Allentown Band is the oldest civilian concert band in the United States. Their first documented performance was on July 4, 1828. John Phillip Sousa recruited at least twenty Allentown Band members for his own band throughout the nineteenth century.
